Ken Ashworth

Ken has been a Score volunteer since June 2011, is a `Certified Mentor' and currently, Vice Chairman of Grand Strand SCORE, Chapter 0381. 

Former Independent Insurance Agency Owner / Sales & Marketing / Business Consultant. Specializing in Commercial Property & Casualty Insurance, Group Life, Health & Disability Insurance, Business Buy-Sell Life & Disability Insurance, Mutual Funds, Variable Annuities, Retirement Plans and Group Marketing

During my 35 year career, I was a highly motivated financial and insurance professional who dealt with mostly commercial businesses ranging from; school districts, wholesale distributors, high-tech machine shop manufacturers and waste haulers to contractors, car dealerships, marinas & boat dealers, Churches, Computer Sales & Service Dealers, HOA's and local main street establishments. Who excelled in gathering client information, analyzing data, and providing appropriate recommendations through informational sales presentations and assisted the client throughout the completion process while strengthening client relationship.

Ray Binis

Raymond A. Binis was Chairmen of the Board/CEO of ECM Inc., a management consulting firm. He also served as the Director of the Management Center at the University of Cincinnati and the Coordinator of Management Programs at Cornell University Nyssilir Extension. Previously, he was an Assistant VP at Marine Midland Bank. Mr. Binis was also a Plant Manager with Continental Can, Corporate HR Manager at Spaulding Fiber Corp. and both a Design Engineer and Training Director for ACF Industries. He is the past president and Trustee of the Creative Education Foundation. Mr. Binis has been a Consultant to banking, school districts, universities, businesses and government in areas of efficiently studies, redesign of management organization, restructuring of company operations and labor contract negotiations. He has a B. S. in Psychology from New York State University at Fredonia, a Masters Degree in Behavior Science, from New York State University at Buffalo, and a PE from Buffalo Technical School.

Bob Checkaneck

Senior level engineering manager with experience in electronic technology, inventory and quality management and operations. Specific skills are developed in understanding customer needs, product and supplier management, quality and reliability, leveraging, and teamwork. Education: BSEE Farleigh Dickinson University

Bill Cole

Senior Engineering Manager with extensive manufacturing operations expertise in domestic and international settings. Adept at building and leading high performance teams. Extensive negotiation experience. Highly effective in partnering with regulatory agencies to balance company and local concerns. Extensive experience in Project Management and Training Program Development.
Education: BSChE and MSChE, Northeastern Universtity, Boston, MA

Chet Herman

Chet has been a SCORE volunteer since June 2011 and a nationally  'Certified Mentor' since July 2012.

Chet graduated with an engineering degree from Pratt Institute in New York . After working for Grumman Aircraft, became a full time musician and then a restaurant owner in Huntington and St. James, NY. Then moved to SC and became owner and operator of a fine dining restaurant in Myrtle Beach and Litchfield, SC.

Karen Herman

Karen has been a SCORE volunteer since June 2011, and a nationally  'Certified Mentor' since July 2012.

Karen Graduated with a Finance and Banking degree from Hofstra University in New York. She and husband Chet owned and operated  fine dining restaurants in Long Island, NY. After moving to South Carolina in 1989, they became owner/operators of two successful fine dining restaurants in Myrtle Beach and Litchfield, SC.

Mark Hess

Mark's career has focused on the strategic issues of business management, including the development, planning, organization and execution of business strategies. He has expert experience with business planning, strategic planning, marketing and technology planning. He has counseled hundreds of commercial and governmental organizations worldwide on these issues.

Tom Hudgins

Tom is a retired partner of Ernst & Young LLP, an international public accounting firm. He held various management positions within the firm and was responsible for a broad range of financial, consulting and acquisition services provided to companies in a wide variety of industries. Post retirement, have served on the boards of a number of public companies. Received a BS degree from Davidson College and an MBA degree from Harvard University.

John Lamoree

John Lamoree graduated from Mount Saint Mary's college in May 1985, with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He joined a bank in March 1963 and held various positions in the bank for 44 years, retiring in March 2006. During his career in the bank, he worked in commercial lending, managing a team of four lenders, with an annual loan goal of $40 Million. John was Chairman of the Board of the Greater Southern Dutchess Chamber of Commerce in 2000, and has been in the Chamber for 15 years. He has held every elected position. John also was active in many other organizations and held the position of president in all of them.

J. Robert Manuel III

Bob has been a Grand Strand SCORE volunteer since December 22, 2010, is a `Certified Mentor' and currently, serves on the chapter's finance and fund raising committees.

Bob began his career with Westinghouse Electric Corporation's Defense Center in 1966 as an Industrial Engineer. For the next 40 years, he specialized in the management of multi-cultural business-to-business marketing, sales and industrial plant operations as well as . He has worked for various other electrical entities and Fortune 500 companies, including Eaton Corporation, as an Industrial Engineer, Plant Manager and International Marketing Manager.

Bob's areas of expertise are Marketing Management and Business Development; Sales Management; Multi-Level Strategic Planning and Multi-Function Factory Management.

His undergraduate education studies were completed at The University of Maryland with a B.S. Degree in Industrial Technology. In addition, he completed continuing education studies at Harvard Business School - Strategic Planning Concepts, and Westinghouse Management Training - Leadership and Skills Training, to name a few.

During his career, Bob has worked with, marketed to, and has been mentored by some of the best and brightest minds in the county's industrial sector. He plans to use those experiences as a SCORE Mentor, to assist others in developing successful businesses in their own right.

George McKenna

George McKenna retired to Myrtle Beach from Worcester, MA. He operated an independent insurance agency which specialized in providing insurance for small businesses. He has observed the good and bad practices of small business owners for many years. He has experience in insurance, financing, sales and marketing as well as managing a small business. He is knowledgeable in issues dealing with a family business.

Lee Mednikow

For more than thirty years Lee Mednikow led the sales, marketing and management teams gaining distribution for popular publications ranging from  TV Guide and People to Harmon Homes and For Rent Magazine in the nations’ leading retailers including Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger and Publix to name a few.  

Lee grew his organization from a regional distribution company serving 12 markets into the leading  national publication distribution company  extending to over 80 markets servicing 80,000 distribution locations nationwide.   By the mid 90’s, Lee set the stage for virtually every supermarket in the United States to merchandise  home, apartment, auto and employment magazines in the front lobbies of their stores.

Lee's core strengths include all aspects of sales and marketing in which he can provide help with sales planning, sales presentations, sales aids, sales training, public speaking training and competitive strategy.

Doug Owens

Doug has been a Score volunteer since June 2011, a nationally `Certified Mentor' since June 2013 and currently, serves on the chapters' Executive Committee. 

Doug is a proven business professional with over 35 years of executive administrative & general management experience with Fortune 100 companies as well as entrepreneurial pursuits.  Completing his Bachelor of Business Administration degree, then serving in The United States Air Force, Doug began his career with Allstate Insurance Company and Chubb & Son, Inc., leaders in the property casualty insurance industry.      

He continued to round out his generalist business exposure with positions at Mohawk Data Sciences; AIRCO Welding Products and eventually, divisions within North American Philips Corporation such as Philips Electronic Instruments, Philips Communications & Processing Services and ORIGIN Technology in Business.

After moving to the Grand Strand in 2000, Doug and a partner began River Town Realty, LLC, a general real estate brokerage, which continues to operate today.  Doug can be very helpful to the struggling entrepreneur because he understands and has experienced the stresses and strains of starting and developing a small business and can help small business owners avoid such pitfalls. 

William (Cary) Rowell

Cary Rowell is a self employed Financial Services Professional associated with New York Life Insurance Company. He specializes in small business financial and insurance plan development and implementation. Cary previously enjoyed 28 years with 3 industry leading building supply and hardware retailers. He has proven expertise in all facets of retail operations. He has also successfully started 3 businesses, teaches insurance CE with Cape School and sometimes teaches as an adjunct faculty with the business department of Horry Georgetown Technical College. Cary joined SCORE because he enjoys helping others succeed and saw that his vast experience and expertise could be helpful to existing and start up small business. It is his way of giving back to the community. He is also a member of the Myrtle Beach Sunrise Rotary Club, Grand Strand Toastmasters, the Trash Talking Tour golf league and Socastee United Methodist Church.

Arthur E Simpson, Jr.

Art has been a SCORE volunteer since November 2011, and a nationally `Certified Mentor' since January 2012. 

Founder and continues to run his small manufacturing services business since 2004.  Business has grown to $9 million dollars in revenue and very successful in profitability.  As a 'certified mentor' at SCORE Art continues to advise clients in the Grand Strand from startups to existing companies with a variety of operational issues.

Academically, 15 years as an Adjunct Professor for several colleges.  Subject matter expertise: small business development, marketing, finance, business planning and operations.  Educational background:  BS & MS in Engineering (Purdue University) plus Masters in Business (Penn State). 

Registered Professional Engineer since 1973.  Demonstrated success in inventory management, P & L and Balance Sheet management, product and process development, quality, and general management.  Key focus towards growing value in all revenue levels of companies

Larry Alva Smith, Ph.D.

Larry has been a Score volunteer since February 2012, is a `Certified Mentor' and currently, Chairperson of Grand Strand SCORE, Chapter 0381.

Larry's professional experience includes twenty years in corporate sales, marketing, and account management in the healthcare industry and ten years in sales and investments in the real estate industry. Larry has earned a Masters of Science in Healthcare Administration (M.H.A.) and a Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Business. Larry's doctorate research explored gender and professional differences in behaviors and values between management and sales professionals. Larry's approach to mentoring is to listen and then work with entrepreneurs to help them create a plan that works best for them to achieve their individual goals.

Harold Swanner

Harold Swanner is Owner/Chairman of the Board of Fortune Academy Real Estate. Harold has been a licensed real estate agent since 1981 and has fifteen years as a business broker and commercial real estate agent. He helped turn a small real estate school called Fortune into a statewide academy. When he bought it in 1995, Fortune had one administrator, one instructor and one location. Today, it has six administrators, 70 instructors throughout the state and 14 locations. It grew from three courses a month to 300.

Bob Terrell

Executive Overview: 17 years with AT&T in Management Information Systems. Managed the development of Payroll and Human Resources systems. Opened a retail computer store in 1977, sold it in 1992. Occasional consulting assignments since 1992.
Education: BSEE from Stevens Institute of Technology, MBA from Pace University.
